Donald Trump is stiffing his campaign pollster to the tune of about three-quarters of a million dollars. He hired veteran Tony Fabrizio last May, so it looked as if the billionaire was finally bringing in an operative who knew his way around the political block. But Trump seems to be defaulting on a debt once again.
GOP strategist Fabrizio has worked with everyone from the 1996 nominee Bob Dole all the way to the current Florida governor Rick Scott. But Trump and his campaign are disputing $767,000. That includes the amount the Republican candidate has paid the pollster and what he still owes him, according to a Washington Post article.
The current Republican presidential candidate’s senior communications adviser Jason Miller said:
‘This is an administrative issue that we’re resolving internally.’
Trump did not think he needed Fabrizio or any other professional pollster, but his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort talked him into hiring the Fabrizio firm. When Manafort left the campaign, Trump hired another pollster, Kellyanne Conway as campaign manager. When she was hired, people wondered whether that meant Fabrizio was on his way out.
Financial reports indicate that the billionaire has once again shown how tight he is with his money. Even though Trump took on Fabrizio in May, the GOP candidate waited until September to pay the firm $624,000. According to the Trump campaign’s financial reports, he still owes the pollster’s firm $55,300.
The Committee on Arrangements for the 2016 Republican National Convention (RNC) also paid the Fabrizio firm $273,378 in July, according to the federal filings.
While Trump may not like Fabrizio, by August he started working with four other polling firms, asking them to conduct voter surveys. Despite his issues with Fabrizio, Trump appears to have warmed up to pollsters in general.
The question becomes, why does Trump dislike Fabrizio? Is it a personality conflict? Does the veteran pollster refuse to scrape and bow before the royal Trump? Is it even possible that Fabrizio has lost his touch?
