As America’s bigots crawl out of the woodwork like roaches following the GOP sweep this past election cycle, it’s comforting to know that some companies haven’t gone completely to the dark side. During an interview on CNBC, Target CEO Brian Cornell spoke on his company’s outright rejection of discriminatory laws such as North Carolina’s HB2 “Bathroom bill”.
His company is facing a boycott by an anti-LGBT group called American Family Organization. And so far, the organization has managed to garner a surprising amount of support. They’ve currently got 1.2 million signatures on a petition from people who have pledged not to support Target after the company released announcements that it would not honor anti-LGBTQ legislation.
But Cornell doesn’t stop with simply reiterating his company’s stance on supporting LGBTQ Americans. He delivers a measured but impassioned response, likening his current stance to a similar situation Target found itself in during the ’60s. As one of the first companies to use POCs (people of color) as models, Target experienced backlash from bigots then. And Mr. Cornell has made it clear that he intends to continue the company’s trend of sticking up for what’s right.
‘…we’ve had a long history of embracing diversity and inclusion. A couple of weeks ago, I had one of our team members send me a note reminding me that if we went back to the mid sixties, our company was one of the very first to use African-American models in their advertising. And back then, it wasn’t well received. We had a lot of tough feedback, but sitting here today, we know we made the right decision.’
Mr. Cornell also brought up an important point about Target and their restroom policy. The company has actually been providing multi-gender “family” restrooms for quite some time. He doubled down on Targets stance by telling the host that he intended to ensure over the coming months that every store had such a restroom.
Finally, Mr. Cornell wrapped it all up with the following statement:
‘So, we took a stance and we’re going to continue to embrace our belief of diversity inclusion and just how important it is to our company, but we’re also going to make sure our focus on safety is unwavering and we’re going to provide a great environment for our guests to shop every time they’re in out stores.’
Good for Target and Brian Cornell for sticking up for real American values. Hopefully they’ve gained a couple of customers as a result to offset the bigots they may have lost.
