The Washington Post editorial board has just published a stunning piece about the “darker suspicions” that remain over the president-elect’s relationship with Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
Their discussion of these longstanding suspicions comes as Donald Trump acts ever more strangely when it comes to dealing with threats to the U.S. posed by illegal Russian activities.
In recent weeks, for example, the mountains of evidence have only gotten more massive implicating Russia in the months long pre-election hacking campaign against the U.S. Democratic Party. These hacks ended up revealing tens of thousands of emails worth of private information to the public and fatally undercutting Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.
With the evidence against the Russians in mind, the Obama administration announced in recent days a harsh set of sanctions against an array of Russian interests on account of the hacks. Obama’s countermeasures against Russia included the expulsion of dozens of Russian diplomats from the U.S.
Trump, however, has responded to all of this with an incredibly strange seeming lack of concern. His dismissive response is slowly but surely becoming all the more ridiculous as the mountains of evidence against the Russians continue to grow.
Take what he tweeted just yesterday, for example, when he wrote, “Russians are playing CNN and NBC News for such fools – funny to watch, they don’t have a clue! Fox News totally gets it!”

What? Russians conspire against the United States and that’s your response, Mr. President-elect? To laugh along with the Russians?
With the dozens of statements from Trump like this in mind, the Washington Post thus raised the question of why Trump is acting in this manner, writing, “The president-elect’s dismissive response only deepens unanswered questions about his ties to Russia in the past and his plans for cooperation with Vladimir Putin.”
As the paper goes on to discuss, there is the very real, distinct possibility that Trump continues to hide significant, conflict of interest creating connections to Vladimir Putin and Russia.
‘Why is Mr. Trump so dismissive of Russia’s dangerous behavior? Some say it is his lack of experience in foreign policy, or an oft-stated admiration for strongmen, or naivete about Russian intentions. But darker suspicions persist. We would be thrilled to see all the doubts dispelled, but Mr. Trump’s odd behavior in the face of a clear threat from Russia, matched by Mr. Putin’s evident enthusiasm for the president-elect, cannot be easily explained.’
