As we face the dawn of Paul Ryan’s “united Republican government,” it is more necessary than ever for Democrats to stand up to the GOP’s reactionary agenda. For any Democrats unsure of how to do that, they can take a cue from Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.).
He and other Democrats recently held a press conference to discuss the GOP’s agenda and what their plans were to deal with it. One of the questions pertained to the issue of Panned Parenthood and the New Jersey senator was asked his thoughts on the matter.
Cory Booker called out Republicans for their assault on an organization that provides much-needed medical assistance to women in low-income areas. As Booker rightly points out, the GOP wants to defund Planned Parenthood only because they will never be in a position to need the organization’s services.
‘I don’t have a message for fellow Republican electeds, because they’re not depending on Planned Parenthood in their neighborhoods. They’re well-paid, comfortable people. I have a message for every American, Democrat, and Republican who rely on these services or know people that do, or have the kind of heart to care enough to stand up for the women that receive these services.’
Cory Booker added:
‘I saw what happened when Chris Christie in my state cut the funding to Planned Parenthood. I saw in poor neighborhoods, doors being shut, hours being constricted.’
Despite the fact that Republicans actually lost seats in both houses of Congress and Donald Trump lost the popular vote by more than 3 million, Republicans insist on claiming that they have a “mandate” from the American people. This is simply false and it, as Cory Booker points out, it is up to all of us to make sure that the GOP understands that we will not tolerate their reactionary agenda simply because they insist on it.
‘Republicans now think they’re elected Now with a mandate to do these kind of things. I saw just this week the craven overreach of the Republican Party when they tried… to gut Independent Ethics Oversight. And what we saw there was the American people standing up and saying, “We will not tolerate this!” and so this is another point.
We see that they will listen if enough people stand up and fight!
And so this is the first shot in what is going to be a battle leading into real reconciliation. And if enough Americans stand up and say we’re not going to tolerate this.’
Ultimately, we have to stand up to the GOP and tell them that we reject their agenda. We won’t sit by and let them defund Planned Parenthood or gut Medicare and Social Security. We need to tell them that we are going to build a society that works for everyone and not just the top 1 percent. As Cory Booker explained:
‘We didn’t elect anybody to rip out the key preventive services to make it harder to be someone struggling in this country to get basic healthcare services, that I believe in women, that I believe fundamentally in this country and that institutions like this make a stronger, better, more intelligent, more compassionate, more loving.’
Cory Booker continued:
‘And so frankly, what I’m going to be doing — every single day now leading the group reconciliations — is trying to wake up the conscience of other folks, trying to call to people to protest, to fight, to stand up. Because this cannot be allowed to happen. Too many people will suffer. The consequences will be felt by all.’
