Aside from the awards themselves, fashion is probably the most talked about topic at any Hollywood award ceremony and the Golden Globes are no exception. For our money, Mozart in the Jungle actress Lola Kirke dressed the best with her “F*ck Paul Ryan” pin.
‘thank you lola kirke’
In an interview with Elle, Kirke explained that she wore the pin to draw attention to the fact that House Speaker Paul Ryan wants to defund Planned Parenthood.
‘Paul Ryan is talking about defunding Planned Parenthood. I think that, along with a number of other decisions that are being talked about being made by the new administration, is atrocious. As a person with a platform, no matter what size it is, I think it’s important to share your views and maybe elevate people that might agree with you, that maybe won’t feel like they can have the same voice. My body my choice, your body your choice.’
Kirke said that the pin was made by her stylist and her stylist’s son. Kirke said that she might have the pins made in other colors in the future to support other causes, but said Planned Parenthood was particularly important to her.
‘My stylist and her son made them for me. They made me one in the Planned Parenthood colors yesterday that I was wearing. I’m sure there will be other issues to support, but this one is really important.’
Earlier this month, Ryan announced that, as part of the repeal of Obamacare, the GOP would be cutting federal funding to Planned Parenthood. However, the move has not gone unchallenged.
Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke out against the announcement saying a woman’s medical decisions should not be subject to whims of far-right ideologues.
‘This is about respect for you, for your judgment about your personal decisions in terms of your reproductive needs, the size and timing of your family or the rest, not to be determined by the insurance company or by the Republican ideological right-wing caucus in the House of Representatives.’
On Friday, activists found Ryan’s office locked when they came by to deliver thousands of petitions urging the Speaker to not cut funding for the organization.
