Last night, Meryl Streep called out Donald Trump during her Golden Globes Awards acceptance speech, reminding us all of the time he mocked disabled reporter Serge Kovaleski. So now, Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s “Gal Friday,” has been trotted out to the morning news shows to try to convince America the president-elect was not mocking the disabled reporter and to criticize Streep’s speech.
However, CNN’s Chris Cuomo was not having it and ended up in a heated debate with Conway over whether or not Trump mocked the disabled reporter. Cuomo said:
‘All Donald Trump then and President-elect Trump now needed to do is say “Hey, look: Making that gesture about Serge [Kovaleski] was wrong, and I apologize.” And it would’ve been over. Instead there are these tortured attempts to say “Oh no no, I had nothing to do with Serge.”‘
Kellyanne Conway then tried to say she had never seen any of that. What? How could she not? She ran the guy’s campaign! Conway then pivoted back, trying to turn blame back on Meryl Streep for using her time on stage to talk politics. She also threw some blame on the mainstream media.
‘I’m just merely saying. When you tune into the Golden Globes Awards show, is it always appropriate to talk politics? They can say what they want, but then they have to be held to account. Look, that is a very myopic place. That place, this network, frankly, all believed the election would turn out a different way.’
Kellyanne Conway then asked Chris Cuomo why no one could give the president-elect the benefit of the doubt. Cuomo replied:
‘Because he’s making a disgusting gesture on video talking about Serge. He’s doing a gesture that goes straight to the guy’s vulnerability.’
Indeed, there’s no way to deny Donald Trump’s gestures in the video looked an awful lot like mockery. In fact, it was reminiscent of middle school boys making fun of the mentally disabled kid in the hallway. We’ve seen it plenty.
Conway went on to tell Cuomo we should blindly respect and believe Trump wasn’t mocking the disabled reporter based simply on “what’s in his heart.”
‘You can’t give him the benefit of the doubt on this? And he’s telling you what’s in his heart. You always want to go by what’s come out of his mouth rather than look at what’s in his heart.’
