The single biggest rule for politicians, and particularly those involved in stories involving the highest levels of government, is to tout the party line and avoid being too awfully truthful.
Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) broke that rule, and it was a shocking moment of sheer honesty that will haunt him, President-elect Trump, and the nominees for Trump’s presidential cabinet for quite some time.
As many Democrats and news organizations have noted, Trump’s cabinet picks come with a whole lot of historical baggage. The majority of them are billionaires with vast business ties. One of them, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), was once denied a position as a federal judge due to some of his more racist statements and beliefs, which he denies are true. Very few of them have any experience at all in the areas to which they’ve been nominated.
The answer for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has been to try to ram their confirmation hearings through in a packed schedule in order to avoid too lengthy hearings that might reveal more than the GOP would like about the nominees. It’s a rapid turnaround for McConnell, who once fired off a letter to former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) demanding much more thorough and tougher vetting for President Obama’s cabinet appointees.
‘When a Huffington Post reporter asked Sen. James Inhofe for his thoughts on the matter, it’s fairly clear that Inhofe blurted out a too-honest response in the heat of the moment, one he’ll regret for some time.
When The Huffington Post asked [Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe] on Monday night if this same standard of disclosing foreign payments should apply to Trump’s Cabinet nominees, he said it shouldn’t.
“So it’s different now because it’s Trump?” we asked.
“That’s just right,” Inhofe said.
“That’s right?” we asked to clarify.
“Yeah,” he said.’
That’s right, folks. It’s different now, because it’s Trump. It’s different because it’s a GOP president-elect and not a Democrat. It’s different because, despite being caught in numerous lies and blatant falsehoods, it’s Donald J. Trump.
One of Inhofe’s spokespeople, Daisy Letendre, attempted to walk back the statements, but it was too late.
‘Of course we don’t believe there’s a double standard when it comes to President-elect Trump’s Cabinet picks.’
The hypocrisy of these people knows no bounds.
