Donald Trump decided he wants an end to nationwide concealed carry laws and an end to gun bans. The man who became president said, “They’re not going to take your guns away.” Well, they did not come for them for the past eight years, so why would that be a concern now?
Trump posted a position paper on his website Friday calling for the elimination of all bans against gun and magazines, because he said they were a “total failure.” According to the Washington Post, he wrote:
‘Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice. The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own.’
Although then-candidate Trump campaigned on guns for anyone everywhere, that was not how he felt in 2000. In the Donald Trump book The America We Deserve, he said he was against gun control generally speaking, but he did believe in a ban on assault weapons and a longer waiting period for getting a gun. What changed?
On Friday, the Washington Post reported that Trump wrote:
‘Opponents of gun rights try to come up with scary sounding phrases like “assault weapons,” “military-style weapons,” and “high capacity magazines” to confuse people.
‘What they’re really talking about are popular semi-automatic rifles and standard magazines that are owned by tens of millions of Americans.’
Trump has long carried a concealed gun with a permit issued by the state of New York. The president’s idea is to treat permits like drivers’ licenses. That way people could go into any state, and their concealed carry would be legal, WaPo reported:
‘If we can do that for driving — which is a privilege, not a right — then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege.’
Trump has recommended expanding mental health treatment, which is an excellent idea. He said the problem has long been ignored, which is also true. He says that people who have mental health problems and are violent should be taken off of the streets “before they can terrorize our communities”:
‘All of the tragic mass murders that occurred in the past several years have something in common – there were red flags that were ignored. And why does this matter to law-abiding gun owners? Once again, because they get blamed by anti-gun politicians, gun control groups and the media for the acts of deranged madmen.’
Trump believes that gun control advocates will immediately exploit shooting tragedies and use them “to push their political agenda.” Instead, he says that his party’s solutions would have prevented the shooting.
The president said the existing background check system needs an overhaul.
‘Very few criminals are stupid enough to try and pass a background check.’
Donald Trump believes that criminals would just bypass the legal system and get them illegally. Trump suggested that criminal and mental health records be included in background checks.
There is no need to worry. There are not going to be roving bands of liberal gun retrievers.
