In a scene out of a mystery novel, Donald Trump’s golden shower gate dossier is filled with far more than alleged sexual misadventures. The Senate has called on the former British MI6 spy and Russian specialist Christopher Steele to testify on the Trump-Russia file, but can they find the spy who has gone to ground?

Former Republican presidential candidate and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee Senator John McCain sent a middle man to London. This person received Steele’s file, which also went to FBI director James Comey.

Both Congressional Democrats and some Republicans are trying to set up a meeting with the former MI6 spy who wrote the stunning file, with offers to meet either in Britain or another neutral setting. The Senate Intelligence Committee is particularly interested in Trump’s growing links to Russia, reports The Independent in an explosive exclusive.

Of course, Trump blitzed Steele, calling him a “failed spy.” Truthfully, the British security intelligence services and U.S. security officials consider him above reproach. In fact, the FBI wanted to pay him to check into Trump and company at one point, according to The Independent.

Steele was a regular FBI informant. Last June, he gave the FBI a memo claiming Trump agreed to help the Russians draw attention away from Moscow’s Ukraine attacks. Only four days later, Trump said he would accept the Russian annexation of Crimea and asked the RNC to change its pledge to not provide military assistance to Ukraine.

Steele said Trump knew the Russians were hacking the Democratic National Committee’s emails. During the same time period Trump was talking about the annexation, he asked Moscow to hack the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s emails during an on-air press conference.

President Barack Obama was so concerned Trump would destroy the intelligence, he distributed it to various intelligence agencies and senior Congress members.

Congress members still worry that Trump will sabotage the intelligence community’s Russia investigation. Democrats have called for an investigation into White House chief of staff Reince Priebus. The Intelligence Committee hopes to share information with the FBI.

Steele realized that the FBI would not act on the dossier and came to the conclusion the bureau was involved in a cover-up to block the investigation. Instead, the FBI focused on Clinton’s emails.

Former chair of the Republican National Committee [RNC] tried manipulate the FBI into dropping the investigation. Each day seems to bring evidence of another Trump campaign member meeting with the Russians. Attorney General Jeff Sessions not only met with the Russian ambassador, he lied about it under oath. Five members of the Trump campaign team, including his own son-in-law have met with the Russians, so far.

Republican opponents of Trump hired the Washington-based firm Fusion GPS. In June of 2016, Steele joined that group. After the president won the Republican nomination, the Democrats hired Steele and Fusion GPS.
