Iconic comedian Dave Chappelle attended his local city council meeting to address the issue of police brutality in the “Trump era.”
After stepping away in 2005 from a successful TV show it’s only been in recent years that Chappelle has returned to the spotlight. As a part of his initial escape Chappelle moved back to his hometown of Yellow Springs, Ohio. Yellow Springs is a small but liberal town near Dayton.
Recently Chappelle attended one of his local city council meetings and took the opportunity to speak up about an incident that took place on New Year’s Eve. He also spoke to his local police about how important it is to set an example for others now that Donald Trump has been elected president.
Chappelle approached the microphone and started by expressing his thanks to the Yellow Springs police department for their unsolicited offers of protection and for being “sensitive” to his celebrity status. The meeting, however, was being held in response to an incident that involved the police and took place on New Year’s Eve. During the incident two black men were tasered by a police officer. Chappelle smirked, adding, “Huge gaffe on New Year’s Eve.”
Chappelle emphasized the close-knit community of Yellow Springs, Ohio. Everyone knows everyone, including the Yellow Springs police officers.
‘Given what the culture of our town is like the council has a tremendous opportunity to be a leader in aggressive law enforcement.’
‘Now, we’re being policed by what feels like an alien force.’
Chapelle pleaded with the council to find a special sort of chief of police that will best least law enforcement in the “unique” town of Yellow Springs, Ohio.
‘I would beseech the council to look deeply and to look hard, because this is a golden opportunity. Literally, it could kill the game. In this Trump era, it gives us an opportunity to show everybody that local politics reigns supreme. We can make our cover of the world outstanding. So I’m just begging you to find a candidate that matches the culture of this town, which is renowned for being incredibly unique.’
