California’s Democratic U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell appeared Monday morning on CNN to discuss the ongoing scandal over Russia’s connections to Donald Trump’s rise to power, reiterating the majority’s stance that the allegations against Trump are serious and substantive enough to warrant an independent investigator working outside of the confines of Congress.
After CNN’s John Berman asked him about the current standing of Congressional investigations into the allegations that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia, Rep. Swalwell replied:
‘Collusion is a very technical term. What we want to know is were they working with Russia… what we want to know is were they working hand in hand with Russia, were they providing information to Russia.’
The allegations that Russia worked hand in hand with the Trump campaign to help Trump’s rise to power have been circulating for some time and gathered steam after the details of the allegations, as described in the infamous “golden showers” dossier, were released to the public.
Swalwell deflected Berman’s question of whether or not he’s personally seen any evidence of these allegations being true, instead answering by simply reiterating his call for an independent investigation into the whole thing.
‘What I’ve called for is an independent commission to take this out of Congress. I think it’s too partisan right now. I think we need to declassify as much as possible, and I think we need to debunk the myths that the president has put out there.
‘The only way to do that, is to have an independent commission, and to have an independent prosecutor, because I don’t think the Justice Department can be impartial on this.
Indeed, a number of notable voices in Congress, from both major political parties, have called for an independent investigator to take on the issue of Russia’s role in Trump’s election victory, but Congressional leadership has so far refused to comply with these demands.
Before the congressman let Berman conclude the interview, he offered up one final thought, saying:
‘Tonight, CNN is airing “The Most Powerful Man in the World.” Up until tonight, that was always the president of the United States. And I think this goes to a lot of the concerns that this program tonight is about Putin.’
Indeed, Trump, via the deeply set, well-documented connections of both himself and many of his associates to Vladimir Putin, has given the former head of the KGB a position of unprecedented power.
