German Chancellor Angela Merkel is currently visiting the White House and although things have appeared to be going well, Trump’s childish actions tell a different story.
The media hype surrounding the German leader’s planned visit to the White House was completely justified. Merkel and Trump are polar opposites. From their lifestyles, growing up, to their levels of education, and experience, Trump and Merkel are not a match in terms of basically anything. The only thing they have in common is they are two of the most powerful leaders in the free world.
President Donald Trump met with Chancellor Angela Merkel today and during a photo-op made a fool out of himself, and the United States, by being petty once again. Merkel appeared congenial and happy. Donald Trump, however, appeared to have a very nasty taste in his mouth. There was no exchange of eye contact, no kind smile, no words of greeting. During the photo-up Trump sat staring at the photographers rather than at Merkel.
One of the photojournalists can be heard asking:
‘Can we get a handshake?’
Merkel looked to Trump and then asked:
‘Do you want to have a handshake?’
When the president didn’t immediately respond Merkel repeated her question, but was met with silence.
This kind of petty, weak action on the part of the president of the United States is something the American public has seen before, but it doesn’t make it any less embarrassing to see it happening again.
Angela Merkel is the leader of one of the biggest economies in Europe and an important ally to have, as she’s a key partner in trade and diplomacy. She is the first female chancellor of Germany, and has served as chancellor longer than any European leader.
This blatant act of disrespect did not go unnoticed and will likely create broader consequences for not only Trump, but possibly the United States as well.
You can watch the extremely awkward exchange in the video below:
