Since Donald Trump took office in January of this year, the White House has been missing a couple of people, namely first lady Melania Trump and their son, Barron. It was reported that Barron and Melania would stay in New York City so that Barron could finish out the school year.
While this line of reasoning is somewhat understandable, it is also a bit problematic for the taxpayers since they have had to pay money securing not only the White House, but Trump Tower as well. In fact, in just the months between the election and the inauguration, securing Trump Tower cost an estimated $24 million.
While the security of the president and first family is certainly important, many people were upset with the Trump family’s decision to remain in NYC, especially given that it is harder and likely more expensive to secure a skyscraper in Manhattan than it is to secure the White House.
However, it appears that at least this particular Trump-related controversy is coming to a close as it has been reported by TMZ that Melania and Barron are “absolutely moving after the school year.”
TMZ originally only cited sources familiar with the situation, but it is consistent with past statements by the Trump administration. Last February, White House adviser Stephanie Winston Wolkoff issued a statement reassuring people that Melana and Barron would be moving this year.
‘Mrs. Trump will be moving to DC and settling in to the White House at the end of the school year, splitting her time between New York and DC in the meantime. Mrs. Trump is honored to serve this country and is taking the role and responsibilities of first lady very seriously. It has only been a short time since the inauguration and the first lady is going to go about her role in a pragmatic and thoughtful way that is unique and authentic to her.’
While this move will not result in any changes to Trump’s policies, it does reduce at least one aspect of the criticism that he and his administration have faced. Ever since he took office, there have been rumors that Melania would not be performing her duties as first lady and would instead let Ivanka take on those roles.
Speculation surrounding Ivanka’s role in her father’s White House has also drawn its own share of criticism with some saying it is inappropriate for her to sit in on meetings with heads of state, especially when she was still involved in her own company’s work. While Ivanka’s role in the Trump White House is still a bit unclear, it is possible that Melania’s presence will deflect some of that criticism if she starts to take on the duties traditionally assigned to the first lady.
Beyond the fact that she is moving within the year, we don’t really know what kind of first lady Melania will be. Traditionally, first ladies have used their position to champion various causes such as literacy, anti-drug stances or fitness. Regardless, we should know more in the coming weeks.
