The renowned British scientist Stephen Hawking says that he no longer feels welcome in the United States now that it’s ruled by Donald Trump.
As Hawking commented in an interview with Piers Morgan broadcast on Good Morning Britain: “I would like to visit again and to talk to other scientists, but I fear that I may not be welcome. Trump was elected by people who felt disenfranchised by the governing elite in a revolt against globalization.”
Indeed, science, as represented by Hawking, brings people together. Science has given us information about the progression of the world and how our actions affect that progression. We’ve been tasked now that we have this knowledge to use it to move forward in a conscientious, careful manner that seeks to protect the planet.
Trump supporters have long proven themselves opposed to all of this, modeling themselves after Trump himself. The Trump administration has taken repeated moves to dismiss scientists’ work as irrelevant, including through such steps as a proposal to slash funding to the Environmental Protection Agency by one third. (Trump plans to use the money freed up by this planned slashing to fund his border wall.)
As Hawking put it, “Climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and it’s one we can prevent. It affects America badly, so tackling it should win votes for his second term. God forbid.”
Hawking eventually added a comment about his apparent optimism for the direction of the world, saying, “If we factor in high-powered women in Europe… such as Angela Merkel, it seems we are witnessing a seismic shift for women to accede to high-level positions in politics and society.”
Hawking lives in England at present. He at one point held the same professorial position at the University of Cambridge that Sir Isaac Newton held in 1663. He is renowned for having overcome motor neurone disease to continue on with his scientific endeavors.
If this man doesn’t feel safe or welcome in Donald Trump’s America, then how can anyone feel safe? Trump’s America is a nation of white conservative Christian heterosexual dominance.
