One California resident and Auschwitz survivor took the opportunity to call out ICE Director Thomas Homan during a public forum.
Donald Trump promised through out his presidential campaign that undocumented immigrants would be deported in large numbers if he were elected to office. Although he’s failed to come through on many of his campaign promises there has been an increase in the number of individuals seized by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (or ICE) since Trump took office.
At a public forum held in Sacramento, California ICE Director Thomas Homan was met with a very unhappy crowd, including one man who yelled “f*** you!” just after Homan was introduced.
The moment that Bernard Marks, 87, who survived for 5 years in Dachau and Auschwitz during Hitler’s reign stood and called out the ICE Director the room went silent. Marks has a unique perspective on government-sanctioned discrimination and he did not hesitate to share it during the public forum.
‘When I was a little boy in Poland, for no other reason but for being Jewish, I was hauled off by the Nazis, and for no other reason I was picked up and separated from my family, who was exterminated in Auschwitz. And I am a survivor of Auschwitz and Dachau.’
Marks also addressed Scott Jones, host of the event and Sacramento County Sheriff, directly in regards to working along side Homan to help him carry out the large scale effort to detain those who are living in the United States undocumented.
‘I spent five and half years in concentration camps, for one reason and one reason only: Because we picked on people. And you, as the sheriff, who we elected as sheriff of this county, we did not elect you for sheriff of Washington, D.C. It’s about time you side with the people here.
‘And when this gentleman stands up there and says he doesn’t go after people, he should read today’s Sacramento Bee. Because in today’s Bee the Supreme Court Justice of the State of California objected to ICE coming in and taking people away from the courts.
‘Don’t tell me that this is a lie. We stand up here, Mr. Jones, don’t forget, history is not on your side!’
Donald Trump is all about himself and in reality, probably does not care about immigrants, legal or otherwise, but the United States is a nation of immigrants. The extreme measures Trump is taking have no positive impact whatsoever. Ripping families apart is all that’s being accomplished here, we can do better. Take it from Bernard Marks.
Below is footage that was broadcast live on Facebook by CBS Sacramento of the public forum. You can see Bernard Marks speak around the 27 minute mark.
