Absolutely nothing is sacred to Donald Trump. His previous promises be damned, he is determined to walk back basically the last 50 years of progress in the United States come hell or high water.
He is bringing ruin to, or trying to dismantle the rights of people to protest, the free press, environmental protections, healthcare, education, civil rights, feminism and essentially every other pivotal component of an advanced society. It has been known for a long time that the GOP is interested in having less government, but I don’t know that many Republican voters realized that they would cripple these societal staples.
Furthermore, in the pursuit of less government, do they really need to eliminate legislation which works to ensure an equitable society for all? The answer to that should be extremely self-evident.
It is hard to rank this new development in terms of where it falls on the list of horrible, awful, shady things Donald Trump has done — but there is no question it’s pretty high up there. He has just, officially, decimated the LGBTQ+ protections President Obama enacted.
On Monday, Trump signed an executive order which eliminated the protections Obama instituted with the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces order, of 2014. Protections now revoked include, for example, the prohibition of contractors from discriminating based on sexual orientation or gender identity. These two classifications now have no explicit non-discrimination protections under federal law, making all million or more members of this community extremely vulnerable.
President Trump has said, with this order, that discrimination against these groups will be tolerated, according to Camilla Taylor, a senior legal counsel:
‘..The federal government simply doesn’t care whether or not they violate the law [that demands companies don’t discriminate based on sexual orientation or gender identity.]’
This asinine, archaic, inhumane revision was no doubt undertaken at least in part by Trump’s Vice President, Mike Pence.
This executive order completely undermines previous promises made by the Trump administration that they would “leave in place” these Obama-era worker protections. At the time, a barbaric “religious freedom” executive order was circulating, and leaks to the public identified the ways in which it would make the LGBTQ+ community even more vulnerable.
It was then that the White House issued the following statement to The New York Times:
‘President Trump continues to be respectful and supportive of LGBTQ rights.
‘The president is proud to have been the first ever G.O.P. nominee to mention the L.G.B.T.Q. community in his nomination acceptance speech, pledging then to protect the community from violence and oppression.’
Wow you’re a hypocrite Trump, not like you selected Mike Pence to be your Vice President or anything. Pence, who describes himself as a “Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order,” and is a proponent of conversion therapy.
There is also rumors circulating that the LGBTQ+ community has been slotted for total elimination on the 2020 census by this Republican administration, as reported by the National LGBT Task Force.
Let’s stop this administration from fooling us into thinking they’re going to look out for any one of us.
