Due to his long-standing feud with the press, President Donald Trump won’t be attending the annual White House Correspondent’s Dinner, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be worth watching.
Time has reported that the Daily Show’s Hasan Minhaj will be hosting this year’s dinner. WHCA president and Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason released a statement praising Minhaj as a “perfect fit” for the evening.
‘I am thrilled that Hasan will serve as our featured entertainer at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Hasan’s smarts, big heart and passion for press freedom make him the perfect fit for our event, which will be focused on the First Amendment and the importance of a robust and independent media.’
Minhaj also released a statement commenting on the president’s refusal to attend the event and calling it “sad” which was a direct reference to Trump’s use of the word as an insult.
‘It is a tremendous honor to be a part of such a historic event even though the president has chosen not to attend this year. SAD! Now more than ever, it is vital that we honor the First Amendment and the freedom of the press.’
The White House Correspondent’s dinner will take place on April 29.
