President Trump appeared on Fox News for what may have been his most jaw-droppingly insane interview since being sworn into office.
In the same week in which the president sent troops into Syria to launch tomahawk missiles in response to Syrian President Bashar Assad’s alleged use of chemical weapons against his own people, a week in which Trump has also insinuated repeatedly that he may take action against North Korea, Trump focused one whole segment of his interview on accusing his Democratic campaign rival, Hillary Clinton, of criminal acts.
Trump is not an investigator, has no law degree or legal experience except as a defendant accused of shady and exploitative business practices, and he seems to barely grasp even the most basic workings of the federal government he’s now in charge of, but he knows his campaign rival, Hillary Clinton, was definitely guilty of crimes. He just knows this, and it’s important to keep saying it now, even though the presidential campaigns ended five months ago.
Trump recalled FBI Director James Comey’s press conference from 2016 in which he informed the American public that after months of investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State, no criminal acts had been discovered on Clinton’s part and no charges would be pursued.
‘When Jim Comey came out, he saved Hillary Clinton. He saved her life. When he was reading those charges, she was guilty of every charge, and then he said she was essentially ok.’
That’s right. The president of the United States is still talking about his campaign rival five months after winning the election. He’s still telling his supporters exactly what they like to hear, regardless of whether or not it’s true, except he’s now saying these things with all the legitimacy and gravitas of the highest office in the land behind him.
Trump seems to still pine for the days when he held court over his rabid fans at campaign rallies, who shouted “Lock her up!” and “Trump that b*tch!” while attacking black protesters. It may have seemed frightening then, but it’s absolutely horrifying now.
