After a long-fought primary and almost as equally contentious battle over the role of DNC chair, Bernie Sanders and the Democratic Party are ready to take the fight to Donald Trump. During the weekly DNC address, Democratic Party Chairman Tom Perez spoke about his upcoming Unity Tour with Sen. Sanders.
‘Donald Trump isn’t shaking things up. He’s shaking American families down. And Democrats won’t let him get away with it. That’s why I’m hitting the road next week with Sen. Bernie Sanders to speak with folks across the country about how we can come together and fight back for our values’
During the address, Perez took aim at Trump’s golfing habits. The president has spent the majority of his weekends on the golf course and Perez isn’t going to let the country forget it.
‘As President Trump retreats to the golf course while his 100th day in office approaches, Bernie and I will be talking directly to voters about how the Democratic Party is fighting for you.’
Sanders and Perez will be focusing their attention on states that went for Trump during the 2016 election. Since Trump’s election, Sanders has made it clear that he does not believe that the Democratic Party can afford to write off all Trump supporters.
Perez said that he hopes that traveling with Sanders will help rally the Democratic Party and showcase the strength of its diversity.
‘That’s what Democrats are fighting for: the basic promise of inclusion and economic opportunity for everyone – from the carpenter in Kentucky to the DREAMer in Nevada. That’s what makes our party such a big tent.’
The two also issued a joint statement where the called out the GOP for cutting social services while giving tax cuts to the wealthiest among us.
‘Regardless of where they live or their political affiliations, most people understand that it is absurd for Republicans in Congress to support huge tax breaks for billionaires while pushing for cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.’
The Hill has also reported that the two will be joined by Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards when the two stop in Las Vegas, Nevada.
