Former president Barack Obama’s office announced on Friday that he will be appearing in public for the first time since his presidency in his hometown, Chicago, when he speaks at an event on Monday.
So, what has our favorite president been up to since January?
According to the New York Times, since leaving the White House on January 20, Obama has spent much of his time vacationing on a Caribbean island with English business magnate and billionaire Richard Branson, at a private resort in French Polynesia, and in Palm Springs, California.
Not much has been heard from the beloved former president in the past three months, but now, he’s back.
Near the site of Obama’s upcoming presidential library, the University of Chicago will be holding a town hall style meeting, in which Obama will take part of with the youth, where they will discuss “community organizing and civic engagement.”
Obama’s office said in a statement:
‘This event is part of President Obama’s post-presidency goal to encourage and support the next generation of leaders driven by strengthening communities around the country and world.’
This will mark the beginning of the former president’s re-entry into the public world. He is then scheduled to go to Boston to accept the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award next month. Obama also has a meeting planned in Berlin, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, which just so happens to be at the same time in as President Donald Trump’s first overseas trip to a NATO summit in Belgium.
Sources close to Trump say that even after the president accused Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower during the presidential race, with no evidence whatsoever, they do not expect the former president to use his events to go after Trump.
A close source to the president said earlier this month:
‘It’s not in anyone’s interest … for [Obama] to become the face of the resistance or narrate the Trump presidency. He’s acutely aware that when he speaks, he sucks up all the oxygen, and that suppresses the next generation of leaders from rising.’
Whoever said that obviously confused the former president with the current president. Anything that comes out of Trump’s mouth is trash and is only polluting our air even more.
