The new president feels no shame and none of the dignity of the office he holds in insulting others in childish and disgusting ways, and he has a particular problem with attacking women for their appearance. He’s been known to call women “fat pigs,” said that Carly Fiorina could never be president because her face was not attractive enough to him, and recently tweeted insults about Morning Joe’s Mika Brzezinski having had a bad face lift.
In the midst of the most recent controversies over Trump and his attacks on women, New York Times columnist Gail Collins has come forward to say that Trump also once committed a similar attack against her.
‘I have to confess I’ve overestimated Donald Trump.
‘Back in the day, he sent me a copy of a column he objected to, with some notes suggesting I was a “dog and a liar” with “the face of a pig.”
‘I’ve had many opportunities to make use of that story since Trump became a presidential candidate, so it’s all fine for me. However, I have to admit that it did not occur to me he’d keep doing that kind of stuff as president of the United States.’
These sorts of attacks, while being petty and far below the dignity of the office of President of the United States, are also the kind of statement that makes young girls believe the only valuable thing about them is the way that they look, and that men like Donald Trump have the right to rank and determine their value.
Despite all the talk by Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, and his “counselor,” Kellyanne Conway, about feminism and women’s empowerment, the two have been strangely silent about Trump’s vicious words about Mika Brzezinski. There has been no response from the White House regarding Collins’ claims, either.
While few of us are surprised by anything Trump says anymore, his comments about women and their looks is especially troubling. It is difficult to imagine this Misogynist-in-Chief representing women and understanding their particular needs and experiences. This is not the first attack on a woman for her looks, and it is sure to not be his last, either.
