With Donald Trump Jr. releasing the eyebrow raising email chain that many are referring to as the smoking gun for the Russian collusion scandal, he’s understandably in a hurry to respond, go into PR mode, and clean up the nasty mess that he’s created. So, news that he was sitting down for a one-on-one with someone was not surprising.
What’s disgusting though was the choice of who he sat down with. Any well-respected journalist would have changed their entire schedule to do this interview. However, any well-respected journalist would also ask fair questions – and that would include tough questions – because that’s what fair means. Fair questioning means you are going to be asked tough questions. For a Trump though, that’s unacceptable. Rather than sit down with a well-respected journalist, Trump Jr. chose to sit down with Fox News’ one and only Sean Hannity.
Something important should be noted here: Hannity really isn’t a journalist by any means. He’s even admitted to it. Back in 2016, he faced criticism for his soft interviews with Donald Trump. He even admitted he would put Hillary Clinton through a tougher line of questioning compared to Republicans.
‘If I’m interviewing Hillary Clinton, it’s gonna be a hundred times harder than any Republican, because I believe the Republicans represent, and have a far better vision, one that I agree with, I just have less disagreement with them.’
As for being a well-respected journalist who earned their stripes and worked their way up the journalistic ladder? He admitted openly in the same statement he was no journalist. He was simply a talk show host.
‘I’m not a journalist, I’m a talk show host.’
So, basically, the Jerry Springer of Fox News interviewed Donald Trump Jr., and it was everything you could expect.
Hannity’s 10 p.m. show started with his monologue before the interview was aired. It was a mixture of rants directed at Hillary Clinton, the “Destroy-Trump Media,” and mentioned something about conspiracies.
When he introduced Trump Jr., they immediately started on the first email.
Hannity asked about the email and the most alarming line regarding the Russian government and their support for Trump. He asked specifically if it caused Trump Jr. to hesitate or cause any alarms to go off inside of his head. Trump Jr. answered:
‘Honestly, I don’t know. I think, this was again, basic information that may have been possibly there… I wanted to hear him out and play it out and see what happens.’
Rather than hammer Trump Jr. on the fact he was that stupid and naive to just go for a meeting, Hannity moved on and let Trump Jr. play victim.
‘Again, I didn’t know there was any credibility… I can’t vouch for the information. Someone sent me an email. I can’t help what someone sends me.’
Trump Jr. then went on to claim that his meeting was before Russia was a big news story, which must make meeting with a Russian entity with possible information on your father’s opponent totally okay.

He then reaffirmed that he met with the lawyer because he was interested in possible information on Hillary Clinton. After he found out he wasn’t receiving any good dirt and the meeting was actually spent talking about adoption laws, it was over. He even assured Hannity that the meeting was only 20 minutes long, and he received no information on Clinton.
‘It was a waste of 20 minutes, which is a shame.’
Of course it’s a shame. He insists he didn’t get any dirt on Clinton. It’s also shameful that he was told the Russian government was interested in his father winning, and he fell for it. It’s shameful that nothing went off in that thick head of his that said, “You might want to have someone check this out or check out the legalities behind this.”
What is a shame is that this was basically an admission that he meant to commit a crime of collusion; however, the information wasn’t there, so the crime never happened. The intent, however, was totally there.
He then admitted that what he did wasn’t the best idea and admitted he would do things differently.
‘In retrospect, I probably would have done things a little differently. Again, this was before Russian mania, before they were building it up in the press.’
Of course he’d do things differently. He’d have been more careful about covering his tracks had he known the American media and the American people actually had an issue with the possibility of collusion between a presidential campaign and a country that isn’t really our ally.
After all of these “hard-hitting” questions, Hannity allowed Trump Jr. to talk about just how much his father has done for the United States so far. He also allowed Junior to talk about how the Trump family has been victimized. This is despite the fact that Hannity spent eight long years attacking former President Barack Obama.
