The meeting Donald Trump Jr. had last summer with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya has dominated the news for the last couple of days. Despite the Trump family’s desperate attempts to sweep this issue under the rug, it doesn’t show any signs of disappearing anytime soon.
On Wednesday evening, CNN’s Anderson Cooper sat down with Sebastian Gorka, President Trump’s deputy assistant, to discuss the latest scandal to plague the White House.
Gorka began the interview by denying the rumors that have been circulating about chaos in the White House. Gorka called the suggestion that people are panicking over Trump Jr.’s meeting with Russian lawyer “laughable” and “just fake news.”
‘We are pushing the Make America Great Again agenda. The president is a steam locomotive that will not be stopped. It’s just fake news. I’m sad to see CNN fall to this. I know you want salacious, sensational coverage for your ratings, so your corporate sponsors and owners will have more money. But that’s not media, that’s not reportage, it’s just fake news.’
After saying that he was “just going to ignore the insults” from Gorka, Cooper went on to ask him about the claim Trump made earlier on Wednesday about any news outlet that relies on anonymous sources being fake.
In the manner that is typical of members of Trump’s team, Gorka dodged the question. Instead, he attacked Cooper for a recent story that CNN published and then had to retract because it contained incorrect information. Obviously irritated by this comment, Cooper responded by saying:
‘That reporting was wrong and we corrected ourselves. Unlike the White House, which has never corrected itself on anything.’
‘But c’mon! Let’s be honest here though. He only published these emails because The New York Times got the emails and was gonna publish them and he smartly got ahead of it. And the only reason that this story has lasted so long is because he wasn’t transparent from the beginning.’
The two continued to argue back and forth for a few minutes about the “fake news industrial complex” — a phrase obviously thrown out by Gorka — but things really came to a head when Gorka attacked CNN’s ratings and pointed out that the network is currently ranked 13th, “behind Nick at Nite.”
Cooper responded to this line, which has been used frequently by Trump supporters for the last few days, by saying, “You used that line on Monday and you know it was sorta mildly amusing –”
He was then cut off by Gorka, who pointed out that Fox News’ Tucker Carlson “gets 4 million viewers” while he “barely scratches 800,000.”
To this Cooper rolled his eyes and said, “Oh Jesus.”
He then mocked Gorka for having the time to memorize cable news ratings.
‘But I think it’s funny that you have enough time in the White House, which is apparently you’re so busy, you’re able to sit around and read Nielsen numbers.’
Gorka then insisted that he gets “really good prep from [his] team because the White House press team is superb.”
