The Trump family has tried desperately to sweep the younger Donald’s meeting with a Russian lawyer under the rug, but the media — and much of the country, for that matter — is not ready to let it go. One of the biggest issues that people have with Trump Jr.’s meeting is the fact that his story about it has repeatedly changed.
Trump Jr. originally denied having met with anyone from Russia during his father’s campaign. However, once he found out that The New York Times had copies of his emails, he tried to get in front of the story and published them himself on Twitter.
Since Trump Jr. published the emails and released a statement trying to dismiss the significance of the meeting, which he was lured to with the promise of compromising information about Hillary Clinton, some on the right have heaped praise upon him for his transparency.
Trump Jr. may have published the emails, but he still hasn’t been completely transparent. News broke Friday that revealed there were more people involved in the meeting than he originally acknowledged.
Fox News’ Shepard Smith learned of this fact during Friday’s episode of his show, Shepard Smith Reporting. After confirming the news, Smith tore into the Trump administration over the latest revelation, asking his colleague, Chris Wallace, why the Trumps continue to lie about the matter.
‘We’re still not clean on this, Chris. If there’s nothing there — and that’s what they tell us, they tell us there’s nothing to this and nothing came of it, there’s a nothingburger, it wasn’t even memorable, didn’t write it down, didn’t tell you about it, because it wasn’t anything, so I didn’t even remember it — with a Russian interpreter in the room at Trump Tower? If all of that, why all these lies? Why is it lie after lie after lie? If you clean, come on clean, you know? My grandmother used to say when first we practice to — Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive. The deception, Chris, is mind-boggling. And there are still people who are out there who believe we’re making it up. And one day they’re gonna realize we’re not and look around and go, Where are we, and why are we getting told all these lies?’
Following Smith’s questions, Wallace simply said:
‘I don’t know what to say.’
