Trump Makes A Friday Golf Announcement That Has Americans Rightfully Angry

Yet again, some important piece of news about the president has come from his Twitter account, with him announcing on Friday that he will be attending the U.S. Women’s Open.

He tweeted after leaving France:

‘Left Paris for U.S.A. Will be heading to New Jersey and attending the #USWomensOpen, their most important tournament, this afternoon.’

Trump was in France as the special guest of French president Emmanuel Macron for Bastille Day celebrations. The U.S. Women’s Open is being held this year at Trump’s private golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he has spent eleven days since taking office.

Just like with everything else that Trump touches, him holding the U.S. Women’s Open at his golf club and subsequently announcing his attendance is not without controversy. Associating with Trump — or Trump associating with you — will pretty much never turn out good for you, and the same goes for those involved in the U.S. Women’s Open.

There was a large protest banner flown in the skies near the recent U.S. Open, admonishing those sports executives in charge of the U.S. Women’s Open to move it away from the private golf club belonging to the controversial president.

They didn’t listen.

The women’s advocacy group UltraViolet issued a statement on the occasion of the U.S. Open protest — which they were behind — calling the plans to hold the U.S. Women’s Open at Trump’s private golf club “straight up offensive.” As they note in their statement, three Democratic Senators wrote a letter to the LPGA last fall urging them to move the upcoming U.S. Women’s Open away from a place that would give Trump “millions in revenue, free advertising and good branding.”

Trump added insult to injury in many people’s view by announcing that he would be attending the event.

CNN sports analyst Christine Brennan recently summed up the situation by writing in USA Today and saying:

‘If Trump shows up, he will overwhelm the event. He won’t be a story. He will be the story. He will steal the spotlight from the golfers who deserve it, women who receive a fraction of the attention, and the pay, of their male counterparts.’

Even still, nobody involved — Trump included — took any of this to heart, and the tournament is going on as planned at Trump’s golf club with the president in attendance.
