To refresh your memory, the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr. was caught having a meeting with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential campaigns, which he claimed was to discuss matters around adoption. Turns out, as predicted, that was a lie. Don. Jr. released emails between himself and the lawyer, but ended up implicating himself, as the emails showed him plotting with the Kremlin-connected lawyer in order to get dirt on Clinton to use against her.
Actor Jim Parsons joined the panel including Bill Maher, Jon Meacham and Fareed Zakaria on Real Time with Bill Maher, for what turned into a heated discussion on Russia and Donald Trump Jr.
Maher brought up a conversation between Maher and Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, who told Maher that the Russia scandal “doesn’t test well.” Maher went on a rant, stating:
‘Russia doesn’t test well? Make it test well, because it’s not over. It’s an ongoing story. I don’t even know why we need Bob Mueller. Don Jr. took a meeting after he got an email from the Russians saying “we got dirt, let’s work together on this election.”I don’t — you know, the Democrats act like unless it would hold up in a court of law — and Republicans are like “f*ck that! This is the court of public opinion.” How about Don Jr. is a traitor already!’
Maher drew comparison between Donald Jr.’s meeting and a sting on kid pornography, citing Jr’s reply to the notion that the Russians had dirt on Clinton, saying:
‘He sent back an email that said, “I love it!” That’s the crime already! If you sent me an email that said “I have child porn” and I wrote back “I love it. I’d love to see what you have.”‘
Maher cut himself off mid sentence, grabbing Parson’s hand.
Further into the conversation Parsons noted how absurd it was that for past administrations there were multiple investigations, but now people are calling for the investigations to stop, when there is actually something worth being investigated this time.
Meacham made the point that perhaps Democrats were weary to dub the Russia scandal a legitimate scandal or give it too much attention, but as he pointed out, “Watergate turned out to be true.”
Maher interjeted, “you’re not crying wolf if there’s a wolf.”
