Lindsey Graham Responds To Trump’s Charlottesville Tweet Like A True Patriot

-

The recent acts of violence carried out by white supremacists during a rally in Charlottesville, VA, has members of both parties united in condemning neo-Nazis and other white supremacist organizations. Unfortunately, President Trump’s has drawn some criticism due to his failure to openly condemn white supremacy.

During his address, Trump spoke of hatred on “many sides” which some saw as creating a false equivalence between Nazis and those protesting Nazis.

Today, during a segment on Fox News Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham(R-S.C.) became the latest person to speak out against Trump’s unwillingness to distance himself from white supremacists. During the interview, Graham called Trump’s statements a “missed opportunity” to send a clear message to white supremacists that he is not their friend.

‘He missed an opportunity to be very explicit here … I would urge the president to dissuade these groups that he’s their friend.’

He went on to say that Trump should be concerned if he finds himself earning the support and loyalty of Nazis and Neo-Confederate organizations. Graham said that if he were president and found himself earning the support of such organizations, he would take efforts to assure them that he is not their friend or ally.

‘If I was president of the United States and these people showed sympathy for me and my agenda, it would disturb me and I would dissuade them that I was a friend to their cause.’

It’s possible that Trump’s comments have unnerved even Graham as he seemed a bit unsure how to answer when asked whether or not he thinks Trump opposes such groups.

‘I like President Trump. It’s up to him to correct the record here, not me. I think the president can be clear when he wants to be. He needs to be clear here.’

Indeed, for all of his faults, Trump is not shy about making his views known. If he truly does not want the support of these types of organizations then he needs to issue a clear statement condemning them and their agenda. Such a statement would go a long way towards helping restore people’s trust in his ability to handle such situations.
