Last year, Susan Rice, a former member of the Obama administration, unmasked the identities of Trump administration officials. This move did not come without backlash. Conservative media jumped on the story, claiming that it showed evidence of a liberal conspiracy against Trump.
Susan Rice has now spoken out on the reasoning behind the unmasking. CNN reports that it was prompted by the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan’s visit to New York shortly after the election. The suspicious part of the visit was that it was not announced.
The crown prince failed to inform the Obama administration of his plan to visit the United States. This prompted the Nation Security Adviser to merely do her job, engaging in an investigation to figure out what the crown prince’s intentions were upon visiting.
As it turns out, Al-Nahyan came to America and went straight to Trump Tower. Upon his arrival, he had a meeting with top Trump officials, including Jared Kushner, Steve Bannon, and Michael Flynn.
The United Arab Emirates is known for having brokered a meeting between Trump envoy Erik Prince, and an undisclosed Russian envoy, in order to set up a secret back-channel between Trump and Putin. This makes it very clear that Susan Rice was correct in going with her gut and following her suspicions over the crown prince’s visit.
