On Monday, the news broke that Donald Trump Jr. received messages back in September 2016 to his private Twitter account from WikiLeaks. According to MSN News:
‘The messages show Wikileaks, a radical transparency organization that the American intelligence community believes was chosen by the Russian government to disseminate the information it had hacked, actively soliciting Trump Jr.’s cooperation.
‘Wikileaks made a series of increasingly bold requests, including asking for Trump’s tax returns, urging the Trump campaign to reject the results of the election as rigged, and requesting that the president-elect tell Australia to appoint Julian Assange ambassador to the United States.’
WikiLeaks, founded in Iceland by Julian Assange in 2006, is an organization that finds and releases secret and classified information. According to USA Today:
‘The group says it specializes in the analysis and publication of large amounts of censored or restricted information “involving war, spying and corruption” and claims to have published more than 10 million documents and analyses.’
It’s not a coincidence that President Trump posted this tweet, shared by a Twitter user below, about WikiLeaks when he did on October 12, 2016. Trump Jr. had received his first message from Julian Assange only a few minutes before Trump posted it.
Now, it seems that Trump Jr.’s whole WikiLeaks scandal may prove to be incriminating for Vice President Mike Pence. Pence was asked by Fox News’ Steve Doocy, just two days after Trump Jr. received those messages, if the Trump campaign was in “cahoots” with WikiLeaks. The soon-to-be vice president essentially lied, saying:
‘Nothing could be further from the truth. I think all of us have, you know, have had concerns about WikiLeaks over the years and it’s just a reality of American life today, and of life in the wider world.’
Pence thought he could successfully play dumb to the avalanche of Hillary Clinton’s e-mails that had just been released that same week, but it looks like Trump Jr. is enabling Mueller’s investigation much to his dismay. It is slowly unraveling to a point where there is no going back.
Another shadow was already cast over Pence when he lied about his role in hiring National Security Adviser Michael Flynn while he was accepting money from foreign powers. According to The Washington Post:
‘After privately being assured by Flynn that he had never had any discussions about Russian sanctions with that country’s ambassador, Pence went on TV in mid-January and publicly parroted Flynn’s denial. But on Jan. 26, President Trump and a small group of senior aides learned that the Justice Department had evidence that Flynn had, in fact, discussed sanctions and misled the vice president.’
Here were some responses to Brendan Nyhan’s Tweet on Monday night:
Information on Pence is vital to Mueller’s investigation because if Trump goes down, Pence needs to go with him. He is just as corrupt as his buddy and his radical right-wing agenda might even be scarier. Pence has even endorsed conversion therapy for LGBT people. Cliston Brown, a columnist at The Observer said:
‘While Pence clearly has more self-control and self-awareness than Trump, that’s exactly what makes him more dangerous. He has all the same ideas and goals as Trump—and, as an added bonus, a religious-right agenda that’s even worse—and a much better chance of actually implementing them.’
If the Mueller is going to clean house, he needs to clean the whole house.
