BREAKING: Mueller Files First Criminal Charges Against General Michael Flynn

Even before Donald Trump was inaugurated in January, the man he would later tap as national security adviser was already overstepping his bounds and lying about it. Now, he has been charged with a crime in the Mueller investigation.

Former Gen. Michael Flynn received his first charge on Friday for lying about his contacts with Russia.

The legal website explains the severity of the sentencing that Flynn could be facing for his crimes.

’18 U.S.C. § 1001 makes it a federal crime for anyone who “in any matter within the jurisdiction of the executive, legislative, or judicial branch of the Government of the United States, knowingly and willfully … makes any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation.” The same statute has been used to convict and imprison Rod Blagojevich, Scooter Libby, Bernard Madoff, Martha Stewart, and Jeffrey Skilling.

Flynn could face at least five years in jail, or he could be offered a plea bargain to provide information on other Trump campaign and administration associates.’

While speculation has swirled around Flynn’s potential for flipping on someone higher up in the Trump administration to not only save himself but also his son, Michael Flynn, Jr., these are the first charges brought against the former general. Considering the scope of his crimes, which include the planned kidnapping of a cleric wanted in Turkey, the charges seem quite a bit smaller than what his potential charges could have been, a move even more convincing that Flynn has made a deal to flip on either Trump or someone very close to him.

Flynn is expected to plead guilty to the charges.
