Reality has finally begun to sink in at the White House. The first Donald Trump knew about his former national security adviser Mike Flynn making a plea deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller was when he saw it in the news. An aide described the president’s mood as “bad.”
Mueller’s investigation and legal teams have been extremely tight-lipped, and the White House was caught totally off-guard when Flynn appeared at court.
Flynn walked into federal court surrounded by reporters. In the background protesters shouted an ironic “Lock him up! Lock him up!” On the campaign trail, Flynn led chants about Trump’s presidential election competitor, Hillary Clinton. He shouted “Lock her up! Lock her up!”

A source near the White House explained how the everyone there has been reacting.
Trump is "melting down" over Michael Flynn news. Launched coffee pot into a West Wing hallway & "not taking any calls all day."

‘What they’re freaked out about is that there are no leaks. Papadopoulos didn’t leak. Flynn didn’t leak. They feel like they can’t trust anyone. Their own counsel didn’t know.’
Another former White House source told POLITICO:
‘I know this is hard for people to understand this, but people inside the White House are genuinely not concerned.’
A White House aide commented that things are business as usual. They are meeting on Fridays about top issues, with the exception of Flynn:
‘People are generally nose to the stone on their issues and don’t have time to think about this stuff.’
Friday, Trump attorney Ty Cobb, released a statement trying to separate the White House from Flynn. He said that the general was a President Barack Obama official. That is true, but Obama fired him:
‘The false statements involved mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year. Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn. The conclusion of this phase of the Special Counsel’s work demonstrates again that the Special Counsel is moving with all deliberate speed and clears the way for a prompt and reasonable conclusion.’
Former spokesperson for Trump’s legal team, Mark Corallo said:
‘I don’t think Ty Cobb is wrong to be positive when it comes to his client. I can’t speak to the people in his orbit. But when it comes to the president himself, I think it’s all going to go away. It’s going to be a clean bill of health and he’s going to finally be able to get back to the work without this hanging over him.’
A POLITICO source near the White House said:
‘Trump still thinks there’s nothing to it and they have nothing. I think the fact that they did it on one count should be very alarming to the president.’
Mueller charged Flynn with one count of lying to the FBI investigators. Then, the question becomes, what did Flynn have to give the special counselor to get this deal and are more charges coming?
One reason Mueller might be holding back other charges is that he does not want the White House to know what information he has obtained. That way, he can enlarge his snare to capture more people with additional crimes.
As recently as a week ago, Trump said that he was not concerned about Mueller’s investigation into the Russians interfering in the presidential election. Now, he is.
