While people all across America have been expressing their outrage at the actions of President Donald Trump, many within the Republican party seem to endorse Trump’s every action, no matter how unethical his decisions might be. Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, however, is not one of those who plans to follow the president blindly, just because he is the president.
Sen. Jeff Flake delivered one of the most powerful political speeches of the year, as he stepped down from his position within the Senate.
Rather than the typical retirement speech, Flake chose this moment to address the governing wing of the Republican party. He called for them to open their eyes are really see the irreversible harm that Donald Trump is causing to America, and do something about it.
Flake stated in his speech:
‘We must never regard as “normal” the regular and casual undermining of our democratic norms and ideals. We must never meekly accept the daily sundering of our country — the personal attacks, the threats against principles, freedoms, and institutions, the flagrant disregard for truth or decency, the reckless provocations, most often for the pettiest and most personal reasons, reasons having nothing whatsoever to do with the fortunes of the people that we have all been elected to serve.’
It seems that Trump isn’t the only corrupt politician that Sen. Flake takes an issue with.
After multiple women came forward with stories of former Alabama state judge acting sexually inappropriate with them, many while they were minors, some Republicans have decided to distance themselves from the Republican nominee for the United States Senate special election, for good reason.
Some senators have publicly called for Moore to step down, however, Moore has refused and retains his spot in the December special election.
Flake, however, took it a step farther than useless pleas for Moore to back out of the election. It seems that Flake figures the only way to keep Moore from obtaining a Senate seat is to endorse his opponent, despite the fact that they are not within the same political party.
Flake shared a photo on his Twitter account on Tuesday of a check with the caption “Country over Party.” The check was addressed to the Democratic nominee for United States Senate Doug Jones, for $100.
So far, Flake is the only prominent Republican senator to endorse the Democratic nominee for Alabama Senate. This, in addition to his retirement speech, gives a clear message to the Republicans as they struggle with what to do about Moore in light of the sexual misconduct allegations.
The key to figuring out the meaning behind Flake backing someone from outside his party may lie within his retirement speech, as he stated:
‘The principles that underlie our politics, the values of our founding, are too vital to our identity and to our survival to allow them to be compromised by the requirements of politics.’
Users on Twitter had mixed reactions to Flake’s donation to Doug Jones. While many thought it was commendable, others had concerns about the size of the check. Many pointed out that Moore has been receiving thousands of dollars in donations, making Jeff Flake’s $100 look pretty insignificant.
