Earlier today, The Carter Center, released a Statement from the Carter Center on U.S. Policy in JerusalemFormer U.S. President Jimmy Carter stated,

‘This fundamental shift in decades-old U.S. policy exacerbates tensions throughout the Arab and Muslim world, but we hope that protests can remain nonviolent. Any change to the status of the city without the consent of the Palestinians jeopardizes any prospect for peace. East Jerusalem is a linchpin of Palestinian aspirations for a state of their own.’

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump revealed in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House his decision in regards to moving the U.S. Embassy and declaring Jerusalem as the new capital of Israel. President Donald Trump said,

‘I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.’

This decision is thought only to increase tensions in the Arab and Muslim communities and negotiations for peace in the Middle East could be jeopardised. President Donald Trump disagreed with the approach of previous administrations. The process of  relocating the U.S Embassy, which was mandated by law in 1995, was put on hold  by the last three presidents because of concerns of national security. Trump justified this by saying,

‘It would be folly to assume that repeating the exact same formula would now produce a different or better result.’

President Donald Trump believes he will be able to accomplish what no other world leader has. President Trump believes he will be able to negotiate a historic peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.

President Donald Trump’s decision to move the U.S Embassy and declare Jerusalem as capital of Israel is a step forward, in his eyes, as giving recognition to Jerusalem, where Israel’s government resides. President Donald Trump called this, “a long-overdue step to advance the peace process and work towards a lasting agreement.” President Donald Trump believes past delays in hopes of peace have not changed anything.

Former  Democratic President Carter has repeatedly criticized Trump’s policies in the past.

Last month former President Jimmy Carter let President Donald Trump have it regarding ObamaCare and Trump’s efforts to undermine it. Carter feels the White House is “leading the health care debate into treacherous waters.” Former President Jimmy Carter believes that the U.S. is moving towards a single-payer healthcare system.

In October, Democrat Jimmy Carter suggested that he would like to enter into a partnership with President Donald Trump regarding North Korea. Carter had previously met with Kim Il-sung, grandfather of current leader, Kim Jong-un, against the advice of then-President Bill Clinton. Carter was able to negotiate a deal that lasted four years before North Korea found an alternative to nuclear bombs.
