When Paul Ryan was former presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s running mate, he was criticized for his youthfulness and apparent lack of a backbone. In a sense, Ryan’s immaturity and inexperience was evident, as he stood beside Barack Obama’s former running mate Joe Biden.
The Trump presidency has only exemplified Ryan’s weaknesses. Although he became Speaker of the House after John Boehner, effectively gaining a powerful role in U.S. politics, and securing himself as a prominent face of the Republican Party, Ryan remains in a submissive position, neglecting to acknowledge the president’s wrongdoings, as the White House begins to resemble a circus tent.
Ryan is not the only member of the GOP who has silently put up with Trump’s antics. many Republicans on Capitol Hill have avoided calling out the president, possibly in hopes that being on Trump’s good side may make it more likely for their dream bill to be passed one day.
Most recently, several school children took it upon themselves to protest Trump’s plan to end the DACA program by way of delivering a special gift to Paul Ryan’s office.
The kids were in full holiday spirit as they entered Ryan’s office, dressed in elf costumes, singing Christmas carols, and with bags of coal in tow. But as soon as the young protesters showed up, Capitol police were notified and showed up with zip tie handcuffs.
Unfortunately, Ryan wasn’t willing to hear the complaints of the youngsters, but chose instead just to get them out of his office. It’s unclear and unsettling why Paul Ryan would respond to children exercising their constitutionalism while implementing a bit of holiday humor, by literally threatening to handcuff them.
Perhaps it will require the coordinated action of adults, who approach the Speaker of the House more directly, and less jokingly than these children did, in order for Paul Ryan to take a stand against President Trump.
