Senator John McCain (R-AZ) was diagnosed with a brain tumor back in July which was removed, and was subsequently diagnosed with brain cancer. McCain had undergone craniotomy surgery to address a blood clot, which was later found to be associated with glioblastoma. Senator McCain’s health seems to be gradually going downhill since then.
On Wednesday, it was reported:
‘U.S. Sen. John McCain has been hospitalized at Walter Reed Medical Center where he’s being treated for “normal side effects of his ongoing cancer therapy,” according to a statement Wednesday from his office.’
McCain missed votes on Monday and Tuesday, but plans to return to the Senate “as soon as possible.” This announcement comes though at at a sensitive time for the GOP as Congress plans to vote on the $1.5 trillion tax-cut bill. It is Republicans’ hope that it would give Mr. Trump his first legislative achievement and McCain has announced that he would vote for the bill.
According to azcentral.com:
‘Since his cancer diagnosis, McCain has been healthy enough to attend the wedding of his daughter, Meghan, in Cornville last month and to receive the Liberty Medal from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia in October.
‘But the disease is clearly taking a toll. He has been in a walking boot for weeks after tearing a tendon in his leg, which was also ascribed to the effects of his treatment.’
McCain’s office made a statement on Wednesday, saying:
‘As ever, he remains grateful to his physicians for their excellent care, and his friends and supporters for their encouragement and good wishes.’
McCain has also been targeted on social media for his support of GOP tax cuts that would remove the mandate for the Affordable Care Act. azcentral.com reports:
‘Nonpartisan estimates suggest that move would lead about 13 million to lose insurance coverage and would raise premiums for millions more.’
Former Vice President Joe Biden also tried to comfort the senator’s daughter, Meghan McCain, on ABC’s The View. The emotional show aired on Wednesday morning. There hasn’t been a specific date given for when McCain will be back at work in the Senate.
