Being able to show grace takes a lot of skill especially when you have to show it to someone whose husband denigrated your mother relentlessly during a vicious presidential campaign that resulted in a major upset.
However, if anyone can do it, it would be the daughter of President Bill Clinton and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Earlier, CNN reported that first lady Melania Trump had taken the advice of experts at the U.S. National Arboretum to take down the iconic Jackson Magnolia tree.
The tree was first planted in the 1800s and has seen centuries pass and history made. According to The Washington Post:
‘Herbert Hoover reportedly took breakfast and held Cabinet meetings at a table beneath its sprawling branches. Franklin Delano Roosevelt spoke with Winston Churchill in its shade. Richard Nixon strode past it as he left the White House for the last time after his resignation. In 1994, a Maryland man piloting a stolen plane clipped the tree before suffering a deadly crash against the White House wall. And for decades, the magnolia was featured on the back of the $20 bill.’
However, the tree was considered a liability as it had become a safety issue due to its instability. The tree was being held up by a 30-foot pole and cabling.
‘Arboretum experts said that rigging is now compromised and that the wood of the magnolia’s trunk is too delicate for further interventions. Any other tree in that condition would have been cut down years ago.’
One issue was reporters stood in front of it as Marine One would lift off. The winds created by Marine One could have caused a limb to break.
However, Melania ordered that its wood be preserved.
Chelsea responded to the decision by thanking Melania for preserving a piece of history. She tweeted:
‘Thank you to all the Chief Horticulturists and everyone from the National Park Service who have taken care of the beautiful grounds of the @WhiteHouse over the years. Thank you @FLOTUS for preserving part of a tree I & so many have treasured.’
According to White House history, the tree was planted from a seedling that came from Andrew Jackson’s farm. Just days after Jackson was elected, his wife Rachel died. He blamed her death on the campaign they had to endure. In fact, it took such a toll on her, she supposedly told a friend:
‘I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of God than live in that palace in Washington.’
Trump’s flagrant disregard for the institution of the presidency and the history of so many presidents before him is disgusting. We’re definitely not giving Melania a free pass, but the fact she recognized the importance and chose to preserve a piece of history in some way is refreshing.
Furthermore, the grace that Clinton showed should be served as an example to Donald who is still losing it over Hillary’s e-mails, Clinton conspiracies, and absolute BS even though he won the White House.
