The Russia investigation continues to press on as the new year has dawned, although the president and his allies have done everything that they can to put an end to it. Trump has learned by now that it’s not as though trying to fire his way out of the investigation, removing officials from office responsible for the investigation, is actually going to help him.
Even still, the president and his allies have sought to discredit the investigation into his team in the absence of Trump actually firing its leaders. Part of this effort to discredit the Russia investigation has consisted of a push to discredit former British spy Christopher Steele’s collection of allegations against the president, a collection that was first revealed to the public early last year, sparking immediate condemnation from the president.
As a counter to Republicans’ efforts to discredit the so-called Steele dossier, ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee Sen. Dianne Feinstein has now released the full transcript of Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson’s testimony offered before Congress last year.
You can check out the lengthy document for yourself below.
As Sen. Feinstein put it:
‘The innuendo and misinformation circulating about the transcript are part of a deeply troubling effort to undermine the investigation into potential collusion and obstruction of justice. The only way to set the record straight is to make the transcript public.’
Feinstein’s decision was made with the support of the other Democrats on her committee and comes after Republicans issued a criminal referral against Steele himself based on information already in the possession of the federal government and without first consulting the Democrats on the committee.
Feinstein’s decision also comes after the heads of Fusion GPS, who cooperated with Steele in the production of the dossier, pushed for the committee to make the transcript of Simpson’s testimony public, writing earlier this year:
‘Republicans have refused to release full transcripts of our firm’s testimony, even as they selectively leak details to media outlets on the far right. It’s time to share what our company told investigators.’
Notably, one individual widely believed to be one of Steele’s sources has already died under suspicious circumstances, lending credibility to the idea that the dossier is trustworthy.
