GOP Senator Drops Russia Bombshell On Twitter; Fully Incriminates Himself Like A Fool

No matter whether or not key members of the Trump team really did cooperate with Russia in their efforts to influence the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, it remains an effectively indisputable fact that Russia really did carry on with such efforts.

Sure, the president has cast doubt on the intelligence community’s assertions about the true scope of Russian election meddling, but that’s not going to make reality change.

As a part of the effort to get to the bottom of the issue of Russian election meddling, social media companies like Twitter have been pressed to crack down on the usage of their platforms by Russian propagandists.

The shadowy so-called “Internet Research Agency” has proven responsible for a large chunk of Russian propaganda activities on the web, and last Friday, Twitter announced that it was suspending a whopping 1,062 new accounts that it had found to be connected to the entity.

Following a request from U.S. Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, the social media giant sent out emails to all 677,775 of its users who had interacted in some form with suspected Internet Research Agency-linked content, be that through likes, retweets, or follows. There was no apparent notification sent to individuals who might have replied to one of the Internet Research Agency linked posts.

One of those 677,775 people to receive such a notification is none other than Texas GOP Senator John Cornyn, who posted the email that he got from Twitter on the social media platform itself.

The email, presumably the same as that which was sent to the other users who interacted with the troll content, read in part:

‘Consistent with our commitment to transparency, we are emailing you because we have reason to believe that you either followed one of these accounts or retweeted or liked content from these accounts during the election period. This is purely for your own information purposes, and is not related to a security concern for your account.’

Check it out below.

Cornyn captioned the post by writing that social media is “finally… waking up to manipulation of public opinion by our adversaries,” adding that we all “need to step up to meet this challenge, especially the Press.”

It’s not immediately clear why on earth he’s suggesting that the press hasn’t been effective in its coverage of Russian disinformation campaigns in the U.S. He might be suggesting that the press has been too focused on exacting their supposed personal vendetta against Trump, which is ridiculous — the point has never been to see Trump fall because of some personal vendetta, the issue is that a foreign power meddled in our elections and he — at the very least — doesn’t care.

That’s not going to stop Cornyn from taking after his leader and attacking the press, though.
