Leave it to the Trump administration to turn the annual White House Easter Egg Roll into a spectacle. The perhaps most obvious example of the antics from the president’s team this Monday comes in the form of remarks from the president himself. While addressing the crowd gathered for the event, he basically stumped for himself, touting successes in funding the military and keeping the economy afloat.
Why he thought that this partisan narrative he offered was relevant is anyone’s guess. He has, of course, sought to tout the military and the economy as success stories of his administration in the past, conveniently ignoring the contributions of Barack Obama, among other issues.
Among other antics pulled by the Trump team is the fact that the president’s son Donald Trump Jr. showed up with a pin reading “Deplorable” on his suit jacket.
After Hillary Clinton used that term to describe some of Trump’s supporters during the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, the president’s base took the term as a badge of honor.
Despite the president’s supporters dismissing the significance of Clinton’s observation, issues on the part of the president and his base remain, like racism, sexism, and homophobia. The president has given his supporters the green light to proceed with their own expressions of these sentiments through his own behavior. In the most obvious examples of this, the president has both sought to put up a wall in between the U.S. and Mexico and to ban an entire religion from traveling to the United States.
Neither of those proposals could exactly be said to be grounded in some kind of insurmountable, well documented need on the part of Americans; even still, the president has found it nothing to put them forward anyway.
The president’s son Donald Trump Jr. evidently thinks that the issues pointed out by many as inherent in his dad’s plans are nothing more than a laughing matter, considering we saw him Monday wearing a pin that identifies himself as “deplorable.”

Besides the pin, it’s also notable that he showed up Monday with estranged wife Vanessa Trump, who recently filed for a divorce. The two of them weren’t alone, of course, appearing with their children at the event.
Some of the secrets of the marriage of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Haydon have recently spilled to the press, including the fact that the president’s son allegedly had an affair with Aubrey O’Day, who is a singer and former contestant on his dad’s show The Celebrity Apprentice.
Besides the appearance from Trump Jr. alongside Vanessa at the event, the Easter Egg Roll also ended up poised for scrutiny because of some comments from longtime Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway. She made a crack about the fact that it’s still an open question who will be the first female president of the United States before reading a book to a group of children, calling to mind, of course, the fact that she worked against the first female major party presidential candidate during the 2016 election.
It’s a wonder when, as made most clear by the president’s comments to the crowd as a whole, the Trump administration can’t even pull off something as simple as an Easter Egg Roll without attracting controversy. They have got at least two more of these; we’ll see about anything beyond that.
