As the nation continues to languish under the weight of the Trump administration and its many issues, it also continues the forward march to the midterm elections later this year. Every seat in the U.S. House and a number of seats in the U.S. Senate will be up for grabs, and Democrats hope to be able to become the majority party in one if not both houses of Congress.

Democrats scored a significant victory in a related front on Tuesday as they continue to prepare for the elections later this year, with Democrat Steve Stern beating out Republican Janet Smitelli in the race to lead a Long Island New York state Assembly seat.

Stern’s win gives his party control of the seat for the first time since the 1970s, and Vox reported his victory to be the 40th time that a Democrat has won a formerly GOP-held seat under President Trump.

His win was helped along by the fact that there are more registered Democrats in his district than there are registered Republicans. It comes after Democrats have already exemplified their progress with other special election wins across the country, including that of Doug Jones over Roy Moore and Conor Lamb over Rick Saccone.

Also on Tuesday, Democrats in New York managed to win two state Senate races, making them the majority party in that body, but their control is being hindered by a Democrat who caucuses with the Republicans.
