No matter how many times Donald Trump pushes the idea that undocumented immigrants in the United States are members of a gang known as MS-13 are behind his promises of a border wall and his rants against people entering the country at its southernmost border, the truth is that these criminals make up only 0.0008 percent of all undocumented immigrants currently living in the country. Many of those facing deportation being detained at this time are children, and the ACLU reports that these children are being abused by those in charge of border security.

The number of unaccompanied minor children entering the U.S. to escape dangerous and impoverished conditions in their home countries has increased significantly and the treatment they’re receiving once in the country is horrifying, to say the least.

‘While in CBP custody, immigrant children have reported physical and psychological abuse, unsanitary and inhumane living conditions, isolation from family members, extended periods of detention, and denial of access to legal and medical services.’

To make matters worse, promises by the Department of Homeland Security to investigate these abuses have not been fulfilled. A documents request filed with under the Freedom of Information Act took months to be answered, and reports finally made available to the ACLU showed “a pattern of intimidation, harassment, physical abuse, refusal of medical services, and improper deportation.”

Trump’s “America First” plan should never include the abuse of children, and first lady Melania Trump’s “Be Best” campaign, aimed at protecting children, seems far removed from the reports of the suffering of these children.
