On most issues, Donald Trump is unpredictable enough to be truly frightening as a world leader. On others, he is so predictable that his tweets could almost write themselves.
Rolling Thunder is a group of motorcyclists who have traveled to Washington, D.C. for the Memorial Day weekend to hold events honoring fallen soldiers and the men and women who have served in the military. Trump does not question their patriotism and there is no reason for anyone else to question it. However, Trump’s standards for “patriotism” are rather shaky.
So far, white men protesting the removal of Confederate statues who carry torches and chant racist epitaphs are “very fine people” and true patriots. Black football players who protest the disproportionate incidents of police brutality against unarmed black citizens, however, are so heinous that they should be forced out of the country.
Trump also continued his rants about his 2016 political rival, Hillary Clinton, and his calls for her to be investigated. While Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team is not made up of “13 Angry Democrats,” Clinton was investigated for nearly six years on the made-up Benghazi scandal and her use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state by a majority Republican committee. Trump and the GOP had no issues with that.
Even with a Republican-led committee, members of Congress who have a vested interest in seeing popular Democrats eliminated from future elections, Clinton was never indicted. No one has investigated the DNC because they were never suspected of wrongdoing. The servers for the Trump campaign and the RNC were also not seized even though the intelligence community knew about Russia’s attempts to hack and upend the presidential elections.
Trump knows this. He’s simply counting on the fact that his supporters won’t.
