The Russians are not the only ones who are great at recruiting people. Former Trump campaign chair, Steve Bannon did some of his own recruiting when he was editor at the ultra-conservative Breitbart News. It turned out that Bannon’s activities were illegal.

It all started when Bannon recruited one of his correspondents at Breitbart, Bruce Carter, to handle a secret arm of the Trump campaign. The black reporter was a strong Bernie Sanders activist until he became disillusioned when Sanders lost in the Democratic primary.

Bannon’s newly turned recruit ran Trump for Urban Communities, which sounded positive. This portion of the Trump campaign was not. It had one single, immoral, and illegal goal: get black voters to stay home on voting day.

In an exclusive report, Bloomberg News exposed the Trump campaign’s black voter suppression operation. The former activist was wildly successful.

In Philadelphia alone, Carter improved Trump’s vote by a 35,000 vote margin. That was half of Trump’s total margin of victory.

Of course, the measure of Carter’s impact cannot be fully realized. Yet, a Bannon Breitbart reporter, Dustin Stockton, said that Trump did especially well wherever Carter worked.

Stockton said that Trump did far better in “12 areas,” including North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Florida:

‘Trump vastly outperformed the projection models in the 12 areas Bruce was targeting. I never like telling people not to vote. But from a tactical and strategic position, we looked at it: If you could get them to vote for Trump, that was a plus two.”‘

The campaign considered it a “plus one” if the black voter did not come out at all.

Bannon rewarded Carter with the red-carpet treatment. He introduced the correspondant to the Breitbart owner Rebekah Mercer, Blackwater founder Erik Prince, and General Flynn before he became Trump’s national director of intelligence.

Former general counsel at the FEC during both Republican and Democratic administrations, Lawrence Noble, said:

‘There are some real problems here.’

Now the current senior director and general counsel at the Campaign Legal Center, which is a nonpartisan advocacy group, Noble continued:

‘I would think this is more than enough evidence for the FEC to open an investigation.’

The Trump campaign neglected to list Carter’s activities and failed to regulate all the donations he accepted on behalf of the campaign. Some of those donations to suppress the black vote were well over the legal amount for an individual.

Carter said that he thought the reason he was working for the campaign was so that he would not have to report the spending.

Then, there were the in-kind contributions. Carter took some of the money that he raised for he Trump campaign to buy a group of wrapped vehicles that travelled up and down African American neighborhoods calling for people to remain home on election day.

The Trump campaign sent Carter emails directing him what to do. Carter’s handlers also created a Twitter account to measure his efforts via a timeline.
