Sarah Huckabee Sanders had a most unusual surprise in the midst of answering the of reporters’ traditional questions during the White House briefing. A member of the press asked if she would mind calling on his “young associate” next.  Sanders gave a genuine smiled when she saw something the cameras has not yet captured and agreed.

After Sanders finished responding to the reporter, she called on the reporter’s “young colleague.” A little voice piped up, and she took his question quite seriously.

The cameras showed a carefully groomed 13-year-old boy speaking fearlessly into the crowd of professionals. The mike made him look very small indeed.

The boy asked her how the Trump administration intended to protect kids like himself from being shot to death at school.

The kid’s words clearly touched Sanders. Her emotion was clear in her voice as she struggled to hold back tears. The White House press secretary has three preschoolers of her own, and frequently refers to them during the briefings as a way to loosen up the room.

Sanders’ dual and competiting roles as mother and White House press secretary were evident when she responded, as the PBS Newshour’s YouTube showed:

‘I think as a kid, and certainly as a parent, there is nothing that could be more terrifying for a kid to go to school and not feel safe.’

Sanders continued, saying she was “so sorry” the young man was afraid:

‘So I’m sorry that you feel that way. This administration takes it seriously, and the school safety commission that the president convened is meeting this week.’

The entire press briefing can be seen in the video below:
