The dictionary defines “gaslighting” as an attempt to “manipulate (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity.” Trump has repeated the “fake news” media’s reporting that Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey over the Russia investigation as a lie and a slander against him so many times that his supporters believe it…even though Trump himself said that he fired Comey over the Russia investigation.
On May 11, 2017, within days of firing Comey, Trump sat for an
‘In fact, when I decided to [fire Comey] I said to myself, I said “you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election.’
This is not a quote made up by the media, these are Trump’s own words and there is video showing him saying those exact words.
It does not matter to Trump’s supporters that everyone in America heard him say those words. They choose to hate the media and point fingers at every rare error that is made (and retracted with an apology) rather than call Trump out on his repeated, easily proven lies.
To continue to support Trump, one must put aside the proof that can be seen with one’s own eyes and hear with their own ears. They must ignore the truth and make a decision to believe that the mainstream media is out to get the president they voted for because to do otherwise is to admit that they made a huge mistake.
Just like Trump himself, his supporters will never admit to that mistake.
Twitter, however, was not fooled by Trump’s gas lighting. Read some of their comments below.
