Donald Trump has no trouble beating up on lawmakers in his own party. With three hours to go before the South Carolina primary polls closed, the president hit a sitting congressman with a wrecking ball. Why would he do that?
Sanford challenged state representative Katie Arrington in the race, and Trump reached into his grab bag of blood-drawing insults. Ironically, he reminded voters of a time when the representative got caught having an affair.
The representative was governor in 2009, when he simply disappeared for several days. At first, he said that he was “hiking the Appalachian Trail.”
Later, it came out that instead, Sanford was in Argentina with his mistress. The whole event came out in the media and was very embarrassing for the current representative and hurtful to his family.
Trump made no bones about his preferences when he tweeted “VOTE Katie!” He was referring to Katie Arrington:
‘Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA. He is MIA and nothing but trouble. He is better off in Argentina. I fully endorse Katie Arrington for Congress in SC, a state I love. She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes. VOTE Katie!’
What was Trump’s point in attacking Sanford? It seems, POTUS was not too busy holding a strange meet-and-greet with North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong Un to prevent hims from trying to deal a death blow to Sanford.
Arrington pulled on Trump’s popularity in her pre-election debates with Sanford. Unfortunately, the representative trashed 45, saying he knew the risk, according to CNN:
‘If you’ve already been dead, you don’t fear it as much. I’ve been dead politically.’
If only there were more Republicans who would stand up to Trump.
