There was no way when the news broke last night that former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen is alleging that Donald Trump knew about that infamous 2016 Trump Tower meeting between his son and Russian government operatives that Trump wasn’t going to lose his mind on Twitter about it. It was just a matter of time.
Of course, Trump had to start with his racist nonsense calling for suppressing the protests by NFL players of police brutality disproportionately used against black Americans. He has to first stroke his most racist fanbase and let them know he’s still on their side, hoping they’ll be more willing to overlook everything else as long as their president still hates the same people they do.
Then, the rant came. Trump, who once called Cohen a “good man” and said that he was sure he hadn’t done anything wrong now says that Cohen is a shyster who has been involved with criminal operations for years. The “taxi cabs” reference is related to the claims that Cohen worked with the mafia and other criminals, and is an interesting allegation. However, none of that mattered until it was alleged that Cohen made accusations against Trump. Trump certainly didn’t care about that for the many years Cohen was his attorney.
For his part, Cohen’s lawyer Lanny Davis (who was also the lawyer for President Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal) says that Cohen did not leak this information and believes that the Trump team may have done so themselves, which makes sense in terms of Trump’s people wanting to control the narrative around the story before it becomes an explosive revelation in court.
