As Trump cherry-picks pieces of polls that say his approval ratings are increasing among minority populations, a CBS poll released on Wednesday shows that his ratings overall are suffering during the current government shutdown and that the vast majority of Americans are frustrated with his continued tantrum over a border wall.

A full 70 percent of Americans disagree with Trump on his border wall, at least in terms of whether or not it’s worth a government shutdown. Even those who do agree that a border wall is necessary do not feel that 800,000 federal workers should be held hostage in order to get it funded.

According to CBS:

‘Seven in 10 Americans don’t think the issue of a border wall is worth a government shutdown, which they say is now having a negative impact on the country.’

Trump’s current approval ratings match his all-time low, including the lows it reached during the family separation disaster. His disapproval rating, on the other hand, has reached an all-time low.

‘Mr. Trump’s overall approval rating has dipped three points from November to 36 percent today. Fifty-nine percent of Americans now disapprove of the job he is doing – a high for his presidency, although just one point above his previous high. The president’s ratings have not varied much over the course of his term so far.’

Most disastrously for Trump, the handling of the government shutdown by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the Democratic Party are supported more by their party than Trump’s handling of the crisis is by GOP voters. Minority groups also still see Democrats as better allies than Trump and the rest of the Republican Party.

‘Overall, more Americans say congressional Democrats care about the needs and problems of people like them than say that about President Trump. Most younger Americans, women and racial minorities say Democrats in Congress care about their needs and problems.’

Pelosi’s handling of the shutdown negotiations also received higher marks than Trump’s. Twelve percent more Americans approve of Pelosi’s handling of the border wall talks than Trump. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell isn’t even being supported much by his own party.

‘Pelosi gets higher marks from the rank and file in her party, compared to the ratings McConnell gets from his party. About 7 in 10 Democrats approve of the job Pelosi is doing, while just 43 percent of Republicans approve of McConnell.’
