When Donald Trump was elected president, the fear of him being at the helm during critical times. On Friday, that fear was realized. Trump announced that his administration will be sending 1,500 troops to Iran while Trump plays on Twitter threatening to decimate the entire country.

This is the point where the importance of Trump’s absolute inability to be honest about anything becomes even more frightening. Should this gradual escalation of tensions lead to war, who will provide information and answer questions from the American people about it? Trump and his merry band of sycophants routinely spread misinformation, so who are we to trust?

CNN reports that:

‘President Donald Trump is sending an additional 1,500 US troops to the Middle East as part of a “mostly protective” effort to deter Iranian threats, he said.

‘Many of the new forces will be engineers to support Patriot missile batteries and reconnaissance aircraft that are being deployed, a US official and a source familiar with the plan tells CNN.’

What we know so far about the tensions in Iran, which could have been avoided if only the United States had brokered some kind of peace deal with Iran (spoiler alert: we did, but Trump lied and said Iran wasn’t in compliance), is coming mostly from Trump. During a brief press pool in front of the White House, Trump said:

‘We want to have protection. The Middle East, we’re going to be sending a relatively small number of troops – mostly protective. Some very talented people are going to the Middle East right now and we’ll see what happens.’

Trump made more braggadocious claims about the U.S.’s ability to dominate Iranian troops during that speech, saying that he doesn’t “think they want to fight with us.” Except they won’t be fighting with “us.” They’ll be fighting against our troops while Donald Trump stays safe and warm and well-fed at home, just like he did during Vietnam.

‘Asked how many troops, he said: “It’ll be about 1,500 people. I don’t think Iran wants to fight, and I certainly don’t think they want to fight with us.’
