The president of the United States feels as though he has the time and place to go on social media and criticize a journalist’s chin. That’s the level to which we’ve sunk with Donald Trump — this Friday, he rushed to Twitter to whine that journalist Thomas Friedman had called him a racist in a piece for The New York Times, taunting Friedman as supposedly a “weak and pathetic sort of guy.” In the case of, again, the president of the United States feeling the need to turn to Twitter with this kind of mess — those allegations of being weak and pathetic are almost certainly a projection here. Trump even seemed to criticize Friedman for playing too much golf — which is utterly wild considering the fact that Trump has spent more than one-fifth of his presidency at a golf course branded with his own name.
Still, Trump railed:
‘Thomas “the Chin” Friedman, a weak and pathetic sort of guy, writes columns for The New York Times in between rounds of his favorite game, golf…. He called me a Racist, which I am not, and said Rhode Island went from economically bad to great in 5 years because the Governor of the State did a good job. That may be true but she could not have done it without the tremendous economic success of our Country & the turnaround that my Administration has caused. Really Nasty to me in his average I.Q. Columns, kissed my a.. on the call. Phony!’
That’s just utterly amazing in the worst way. Trump’s reference to a call covers a talk he and Friedman supposedly had in recent weeks in which the journalist was respectful, and apparently the president can not conceive of someone who has disagreements and doesn’t turn to a global stage to whine about them and hurl nicknames. Neither can he apparently conceive of someone other than his own team doing a good job all on their own in government. He’s an egomaniac.
Some of Trump’s evidence for his supposed non-racism came elsewhere in his Friday morning Twitter meltdowns, when he asserted that “the Fake News Media became “crazed” over the chant “send her back” by a packed Arena (a record) crowd in the Great State of North Carolina” while remaining supposedly “totally calm & accepting of the most vile and disgusting statements made by the three Radical Left Congresswomen.” Firstly, there’s no immediate evidence the Trump rally at which those Send her back chants rang out targeting Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar set any record for its crowd size. More broadly — Trump desperately insisting that Omar and some of her colleagues “hate our country” doesn’t make it true. It just doesn’t.
On Twitter Friday morning, Trump also whined about the Federal Reserve’s supposed stifling of potential economic growth and promoted a book about Brett Kavanaugh.
